Sarawak. Who knew?

So hes not going to go to sea after all.

Just a month ago he was all prepared to do Marine Engineering in Kuala Terengganu, and go to sea and fight off pirates. Now hes sitting in his room in this hostel on the UNIMAS campus. University Malaysia Sarawak. Somehow, he managed to get an offer to do Civil Engineering in Sarawak, and so he decided to do this instead. And if you think theres something missing in between the last few sentences, you're right. But long story short, hes going to be a civil engineer instead of a marine engineer.

So Uni life has sorta ambushed him. In 2 weeks from the day he found out to stepping into the university, there wasnt much time to prepare for this. Like jumping into the deep end really. This being Sarawak, he really didnt know what to expect. But he has to say, the University is first class. The University is HUGE. 2nd largest public uni in the country. Easily 5 times the size of Sunway University College. Theres a few man made lakes, for water sports, a football stadium and an olympic sized pool on the way, and a bowling alley. The Uni actually has a BOWLING ALLEY. Facilities are as good if not better than the private Unis. Buildings have this portmodern look to it, lots of glass and pointless structures, like beams and pillars and concrete spheres that dont seem to serve any purpose other than looking good(just thought thats an observation a potential civil engineer would make). Water features everywhere. Cascading water fountains etc etc.

He lives on campus, sharing a comfortable room with Bryan, a local 1st year Mech Eng student. The room is one of 6 rooms in an apartment. Along with another Malay dude and 2 other 3rd year Seniors that will be moving in soon. But the great thing about this place is the internet. He gets up to 3mbps wireless internet. How epic is that. You dont even need to to wait for youtube to load. Epic.

The first week was just orientation. Largely boring and pointless. But the seniors somehow managed to keep them at it from 530am to 1am everyday. By the 3rd day pretty much everyone was half asleep through most of the program. But now that is over and done with, classes start officially on Monday. And hence commences the rest of the 4 years of his life here.

Come to think of it, its also the ending of a part of his life. Looking back, it was quite awesome. Puberty, school, debate, girls, and especially Form 6. THAT was a blast. Uni will probably be more serious. He will probably have to actually take his education seriously for once. He might be more responsible, with long term plans, making to do lists and such and develop the amazing ability to maintain pointless, humourless small talk with strangers.

He will finally grow up now. Probably.
