Health Science Debate Open 2012

The first tournament of the year!

As it was an open tournament, the trend of teaming up with Swinburne Debaters continued. From Ashik, to Kevin and now finally Rafie, who incidentally is staying right down the road from his house. The team was him, Rafie and Kimberly, so finally USDC made its debut.

Round 1

THBT individuals have an intrinsic right to consume recreational drugs regardless of legality.

UKM C(gov) vs USDC (opp)

An unanimous albeit close win for USDC, largely because opp missed the boat a little.

Round 2

THBT patients have a right to keep details of their life private

USDC(gov) vs UKM B(opp)

A close win for USDC. A lot of teams seem to struggle with the idea of a principle debate it seems.

Round 3

THBT overweight air passengers should be charged additional fees for their weight

USDC(gov) vs UITM (opp)

A close loss to Mai and Aerie. At least we can say we gave the best team in Asia a run for their money.

Round 4

THBT physicians are justified in accepting remuneration for participating in pharmaceutical trials

N-AZZ(gov) vs USDC(opp)

A rematch that both teams wanted after the sparring before the tournament didn't turn out so well. A close win to USDC due to the stronger principle arguments.

And so with a record of 3-1, USDC broke 6th, meeting UM in the Quarter Finals.

Quarter Finals

THBT the presence of stem cells within umbilical cords of babies should be used for research

USDC(gov) vs UM(opp)

It was a very close debate, in a 2-1 split the win went to UM. Nevertheless, it was one of those debates which he can only be absolutely satisfied with knowing it was one of his best performances. Even Don praised the PM speech as "one of the best " in the competition. He even managed to be funny in his reply.

Overall, it was a good debut for the USDC brand, and great practise for Royals. Next up Penang!
